What You Need To Know About Lemonade Car

Don't go to pieces. Car insurance doesn't have to be a headache

Team LemonadeTeam Lemonade

Sure, car insurance can get a little complicated.

While we’ve tried to make the process as smooth and intuitive as possible, you might still have questions—about when Lemonade Car will be available in your state, or what a policy will cover, or how our bundles work.

We’ve collected some common queries and answered them below, all in one convenient place. Stay safe!

What sort of discounts or bundles will you offer?

If you pair Lemonade Car with renters, homeowners, or pet health insurance, you’ll receive a 10% discount on all of those products. And if you had Lemonade Car and added a term life policy, you’d get 10% of your car policy (but no discount on the life insurance).

Within the Lemonade app itself, you can easily swipe between the different types of insurances you have with us—all in one convenient place.

How do I switch from my current car insurance?

The best way to handle this is to get covered with a Lemonade Car policy before you cancel your current car insurance. That way you can make sure you don’t run into any gaps in coverage.

How can I get a quote and find out what my insurance price would be?

That’s an easy one. You can click below to start the process, which only takes a few minutes and is fully digital. Our friendly chatbot Maya will ask you some questions, we’ll pull up your driving history, and you’ll be rolling before you know it. Keep in mind that, at the moment, we’re only live in Illinois.

How is Lemonade different than other car insurances?

You’re able to tailor a Lemonade Car policy to your own needs, adding the coverages you want, and setting deductibles and limits.

But the heart of Lemonade Car is how we’re using cutting-edge technology to keep your premiums low, and to price policies based on how you actually drive—not how people like you tend to drive.

We manage this using telematics, a location-based tech that runs right on your phone. In addition to rewarding safe driving, we’re also able to send out roadside assistance or emergency help—free of charge—in the event of a crash or accident. Here’s more info on how it all works, and why we love it.

And telematics also allows us to track your mileage, which is how we know how many trees to plant to offset carbon emissions. “What the hell are you talking about?”, you say? Check out this piece by Lemonade co-founder Shai Wininger for the full story.

How do I file a claim?

That all happens within the app, and we’ve made the process as seamless and intuitive as possible.

What types of coverages will you offer?

A Lemonade Car policy is completely customizable. You could choose basic liability coverage—the legal minimum in almost all states—or you could armor yourself with more complete protection that would include comprehensive and collision coverage, plus things like uninsured or underinsured coverage.

We break things down into a lot more detail—but all in plain English!—in this guide.

Does Lemonade Car cover rideshare drivers for companies like Uber or Lyft?

Not at this time. A Lemonade Car policy will not cover you when you’re using your vehicle for business purposes. You’d want to look into other options, like rideshare insurance.

Does Lemonade Car cover me if my car is stolen?

If you’ve added comprehensive coverage, your policy will have your back if your vehicle is stolen (as well as if it’s damaged by other perils, like fire or vandalism).

However, this does not extend to the theft of any stuff that might be in your car—the vintage guitar you were carrying in the trunk, or the diamond ring in your glove box. For those sort of belongings, a renters or homeowners insurance policy would kick in if there’s a theft issue.

Does Lemonade Car cover motorcycles?

Unfortunately not.

What types of vehicles does Lemonade Car not cover, in general?

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but generally we wouldn’t cover:

  • Cars over 20 years old
  • High value (over $100k) and high-performance cars
  • Cars with performance modifications
  • Commercial vehicles
  • A car used for business

Does Lemonade Car cover me wherever I drive in the world?

It depends on your state. In Illinois, your coverage is effective in the United States and Canada, as well as in US possessions and territories. If you’re driving elsewhere, you’ll want to sort out alternative insurance coverage.
