We’re a full-stack insurance carrier built to provide the most delightful and transparent insurance experience in the world.
We offer hassle-free contents and personal liability insurance in Germany and the Netherlands, renters insurance in France and contents insurance in the UK. We also offer renters, homeowners, car, pet, and life products in the US.
Lemonade is a fully licensed and regulated insurance company, which means that we underwrite, price, and sell policies, as well as handle and pay claims.
We’re also a public benefit corporation and a certified B Corp, which means we care about the community and environment, and not just business results. Once a year, if there are unused premiums left over, we donate them to nonprofits our customers choose.
We’re transparent. We want you to understand exactly what you’re buying and how much you’ll be paying for it. This is why we introduced the world’s first open source collaborative insurance policy, where we ask for customers and insurance experts to come together and edit the perfect policy!
It’s called Policy 2.0, and it’s available in France, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands.
Traditional insurance companies collect profits from whatever premium € are left after paying claims and expenses.
Lemonade was built differently.
Instead of profiting from unclaimed premiums, we take a flat fee out of your premium upfront—that’s our profit—and donate whatever money may be left, after paying claims and expenses, to charities you choose. We call this the Lemonade Giveback.
This way, our customers enjoy amazing insurance, and society gets a little push for the better. It also means that we're happy to pay claims fast and without any hassle.
Policy 2.0 is the radically simplified, modernized, and digitized insurance policy by Lemonade. It lays out what’s covered and what’s not in our insurance product. The best thing about Policy 2.0 is that it was written for the 21st century, so it’s relevant for your everyday life. Making insurance simple, approachable, and relevant should be a common goal, a communal effort, and a universal benefit. That’s why our Policy 2.0 is open-sourced: we want to hear feedback from our community, and share it with the industry so that everyone can help make insurance simple.
Lemonade keeps a fixed percentage from the premiums we collect. This pays for developing loads of cool tech, running the company (salaries, rent, reinsurance, and so on), and turning a profit. If there’s money left after claims are paid, we donate it to nonprofit causes selected by the Lemonade community.

You’ll see a summary of your coverage and a preview of your customized policy before you pay. You’ll be able to edit your coverage and other details—such as the deductible, start dates, and more—all before you finalize your policy. After payment, we’ll instantly issue your final policy and send it to you by email. If for any reason you require a hard copy, please reach out, and we’ll send you one.
Premiums are calculated on an individual basis for each policyholder and are based on a number of different factors, including recent insurance claims, and information about you and your property. We may also factor in the sensitivity of your home to windstorms, severe weather damage, and fires.
The common way to calculate the amount of coverage needed is to take your home size in sq. meters and multiply it by 650. However, we know this isn't the situation for everyone. To determine the amount of contents coverage you need, make sure you take everything you own into account (pro tip: think of it as if everything you own goes up in flames, how much reimbursement would you need from us to cover all the things you lost). You want to make sure you aren’t underinsured, so when in doubt, always try to round up. If other people are insured under your policy, make sure you get sufficient coverage for them.
Sure. Before purchasing a policy, you’ll be able to adjust the coverage you need, as well as choose a deductible that works for you. Naturally, we have maximum and minimum limits to all coverages.
After you buy a policy, you’ll be able to view and edit your coverages through the Lemonade app. These changes may affect the premium you pay.
You can cancel your policy at any time, and receive a refund for the unused portion of your premium. And if you want to return in the future? No problem. We’ll create a new policy for you. Know that our prices change from time to time, so your new policy may come with a different rate.
You definitely can. Just ask your current insurer how much notice you need to give for cancellation, and set your start date for your Lemonade policy on your cancellation date. This way you avoid overlapping insurance policies (that’s a bit more protection than you’ll ever need). Also, be aware that your current insurer might require you to pay a small fee upon cancellation in line with their specific insurance terms.
Congrats on your move! While we can't edit the address on an active policy, it's quite easy to cancel your current policy and create a new one for your new address. Once you move into your new place, use the Lemonade app to cancel your policy. (You'll receive a prorated refund shortly after, ensuring there's no overlap in charges when you create a new policy.) Then, using the app, create a new policy for your new address. If you want to add your high-value items, or you’re having trouble with the app, feel free to contact our Customer Experience team.
No. Our policies cover you, your better half, and any children, as well as relatives living with you whom you choose to include in your policy. Your (other) roommates will need to get their own insurance policy.
If you share your home with your partner, children, or other relatives, let us know that you live with them when you sign up, and they’ll be covered. Make sure you add enough coverage to adequately protect everyone and their belongings.
Yes. If your children are still registered as living in your home, we’ll also cover their stuff while they’re temporarily living away from home. Just make sure you let us know that they live with you when you sign up. We can also cover their stuff against theft while they’re at university or traveling (up to 3 consecutive months abroad) — as long as you’ve added our Anti-theft package.
Generally yes, but there are some exceptions. If your laptop was stolen from your home due to a break-in, you’re covered. However, if your laptop was stolen from your favorite café, or it disappeared from your home without any signs of a burglary, you’ll only be covered if you have our Anti-theft package as part of your policy. (If you didn’t add this when you signed up, you can do so at any time through the app or by emailing [email protected]).
Note: If the stolen item is worth more than 5.000 €, it has to have Extra Coverage to be covered in full.
Burglary involves unauthorized or forced entry (aka, there was a clear break-in) in which items were stolen or damaged. Robbery also involves stolen or damaged items, but involving force or the threat of violence. Theft means your item was stolen, but there was no clear sign of forced entry or violence.
Your contents policy automatically covers burglary and robbery, and you can add coverage for theft by selecting the Anti-theft package when you get a policy or by contacting us.
To clarify, if someone at your housewarming party pockets your favorite pair of earrings, that would be theft, and would only be covered if your policy includes our Anti-theft package.
Your policy covers damage to your stuff caused by fire, smoke, explosion, burglary, robbery, vandalism, windstorms, hail, collision by vehicles or aircraft, and water damage caused by an unintended leakage of tap water like burst pipes, and leaking appliances (e.g. your washing machine) or leaking waterbeds and aquariums. You’ll also have the option to include coverage for theft or natural disasters such as flooding or earthquakes by selecting one of the additional packages (Anti-theft and Extreme Weather packages) when you sign-up.
We also help cover any increased living expenses in these scenarios. For example, if a kitchen fire forces you out of your apartment, or if a burst pipe upstairs means it’s now raining inside your apartment—we’ll cover the cost for a hotel.
As always, make sure to review your policy to understand exactly what’s covered.
Unfortunately, your insurance policy doesn’t cover every annoying thing that can happen. The policy doesn’t cover temporary accommodations if your power, water or heat goes out in the dead of winter, or if your apartment gets infested with bed bugs (eek!).
We also don’t cover your stuff that is accidentally lost or broken—so if you drop your phone and the screen cracks, that’s not covered. We also don’t cover damage relating to normal wear and tear like scratches or stains, or damage that arises gradually like mold or rust. Here’s a guide to what’s covered and what’s not under your contents policy.
We only cover stuff that’s normally kept in your home, balcony, terrace, garage, garden shed, cellar, or a storage unit in your building. Stuff that is kept in common or unprotected areas is not covered. That means things that are normally kept elsewhere—like at your holiday home, office, or a storage facility—aren’t covered.
Yes, but not against every event. Certain coverage for laptops, phones, tablets, TVs, and other personal electronics are all included, as standard, in the policy. Note that any item worth more than 5.000 € needs to be added to the policy as a high-value item to be insured for its full value. With a base policy, your laptop is covered against the list of specific perils (bad events) mentioned in the policy such as burglary, fire, vandalism, and so on.
However, keep in mind that your policy doesn’t automatically cover your laptop if it gets lost or breaks if you drop it.
And to make sure your laptop and other mobile electronics are covered outside of the home against theft, you’ll want to add the Lemonade Anti-theft package.
It’s simple! Before finalizing your policy, you’ll be able to add Extra Coverage for high-value items (anything valued at more than 5.000 € each). Adding items might likely increase your premium—you’ll see the total premium before buying the policy. Items that have not been added are covered only up to 5.000 €.
You’ll need to add coverage for items valued above 5.000 € each, so that they’re fully covered in case of a claim. If you don’t add Extra Coverage for these items, know that we’ll be able to cover these items only up to 5.000 € (and nobody wants that to happen).
Always! Please note that Extra Coverage only kicks in after your items have been submitted and approved by our team. You can add Extra Coverage for your valuable items yourself when getting a policy, or write to [email protected]. Alternatively, you can also add your valuable items through the app yourself at a later stage.
You can add as many items as you'd like. Please note that items are added one at a time, and you will need to provide a short description, photo, and receipts or appraisals for each item.
BTW, with Extra Coverage we’ll cover your valuable items up to 50.000 € in total. If you have any questions, feel free to email [email protected].
Our team reviews each item to determine if it’s eligible for Extra Coverage. If your item is not approved, it may be because your item may need special coverage that is not currently offered by Lemonade. In any case, items which belong to your household without Extra Coverage can only be covered up to 5.000 €.
For natural disasters and extreme weather such as: lightning (including overvoltage due to lightning), flooding and weather-related backwater, subsidence, landslide, snow pressure, avalanches and volcanic eruptions—you’ll need to add our Extreme Weather package. You can do this before activating your policy, or add it yourself anytime through the app. Alternatively, you can also email us at [email protected] and we’ll get back to you.
BTW, damage from windstorms and hail are covered in your base policy.
After reviewing your coverage summary and policy documents, you’ll be able to pay using your credit or debit card or via direct debit. We will charge your first payment after we’ve issued your policy, regardless of the policy’s effective date. After that, you’ll be charged each month on the day your policy became active.
If your payment method is declined, we’ll ask you to provide us with a different one. We’ll keep bugging you to settle your tab, but eventually we’ll have to cancel your policy. We’ll warn you first! Note: if you miss your very first premium payment, your coverage will retroactively be considered void (no coverage).
You can only sign up for Lemonade via our mobile app and website.
While our prices may be cheaper than the more established players, that won’t always be the case. Insurers use different models and data sets to set prices, and on occasion our prices will be higher than someone else’s. Do keep in mind that Lemonade offers a unique perk: Leftover money that isn’t used to pay claims goes to charities that our customers choose, as part of our Giveback program.
Easy! Just open the Lemonade app and hit the Claim button. We’ll guide you through the rest of the process there—it’s easy and painless. If you’re confused or have an issue for some reason, feel free to email [email protected].
After you complete the claim report on the Lemonade app, you will be asked to enter your bank account wire information. We can only make payments to a bank account opened in your name within a territory that is a member of the European Union, part of the European Economic Area, or part of the Single Euro Payment Area (SEPA). If your claim is approved, we’ll issue payment in euros, minus the amount of the deductible (if it applies), directly into your account.
We offer 100% replacement value for any destroyed, damaged, or stolen item. This means we will pay you the cost to repair or replace an item (whichever is lower) based on the price of a new item of the same make and model, without any deductions. If the exact item is no longer available, we’ll reimburse you the amount required to buy a replacement of equivalent type and quality. In other words, we don’t pay less just because your damaged item was used.
How does this work? Let’s say your camera has been stolen. You bought it three years ago for 500 €, and today, this exact model sells at a reduced price of 350 €. Since our job is to provide you with an exact replacement, the value you’ll be compensated for is 350 €.
Our goal is for the majority of claims to be paid almost instantly. However, there will be cases in which we’ll need to fully review the incident to approve the claim, and there will be content damage claims that may take longer to settle. For example, if this is not the first loss you are reporting, or if some of the information we require is missing from your report, our team will need extra time to manually assess the incident, and will most likely get in touch with you for further review.
There’s no better way for us to understand your incident than by having you describe it in your own words. We’ll use your video solely for the process of handling or reviewing your claim.
We define an emergency as an event that requires immediate assistance or temporary housing as a result of fire, ongoing water damage, or any other structural damage that leaves your home exposed. Shortly after you report an emergency, our response team will contact you to assess the situation and provide you with emergency services such as water or fire damage cleanup, temporary housing, or a designated specialist as soon as possible.
Lemonade has a network of emergency response and repair partners enabling us to respond to just about any incident at just about any time. For emergencies, and in cases where you don't have access to our app or website, you may call us at: +49 800 0008292.
If you discover your belongings have been stolen, call 110 (if you’re in danger) or get in touch with your nearest police department (if it’s not an emergency). Give the police as much information as you can. Don’t forget to ask for a crime reference number, as you’ll need this later when you file your Lemonade claim.
Remember, if your personal items were stolen from your home due to a break-in (burglary), you’re covered. However, if your personal items were stolen from your favorite coffee shop, or have disappeared from your home without a sign of break-in, you’ll only be covered if you have our Anti-theft add-on.
When filing a claim, it’s always very helpful if you have receipts for your stuff. But we know that not everyone saves their paperwork (and you might have received more than a few gifts).
If you don’t have a receipt for an item, our team will work with you to confirm that the stolen or damaged items actually belonged to you. In general, though, do try to keep your receipts for the more expensive stuff you buy—say, 250 € and up. That way, we can settle your claim faster.
You’ll see a summary of your coverage and a preview of your customized policy before you pay. You’ll be able to edit your coverage and other details—such as the deductible, start dates, and more—all before you finalize your policy. Sure. Before purchasing a policy, you’ll be able to adjust the coverage you need, as well as choose a deductible that works for you. Naturally, we have maximum and minimum limits to all coverages.
After you buy a policy, you’ll be able to view and edit your coverage through the Lemonade app.
If you’re moving to a new permanent home, you’ll continue to be covered under your personal liability policy. But please make sure to let us know your new address, so we can keep your policy up to date.
Make sure you add enough coverage to adequately protect everyone.
If your family situation changes at any point (e.g. your partner has moved in with you), we will temporarily extend your coverage for up to one month. If you would like to get permanent coverage, please let us know, so we can update your policy accordingly.
Yes. If your children are still registered as living in your home in Germany, they’re covered during a temporary stay abroad of up to three years within the EU and EFTA. The same applies to stays of up to one year outside the EU and EFTA.
Your policy covers you if someone claims you’ve caused them bodily injury, property damage, or financial loss in certain circumstances.
This includes damages that you accidentally cause to a home, holiday home, or hotel room you’re renting ("Mietsachschäden"). If this happens, we cover damage to furnishings and permanent fixtures like sinks, the parquet floor, etc.
What about traveling? Don’t worry, you’re also insured if you cause damage to others during a temporary stay for up to three years within the EU and EFTA, or up to one year outside the EU and EFTA.
As always, make sure to review your policy to understand exactly what’s covered.
Yes, you are! Damages that you cause to your rented house or apartment, as well as to its furnishings, are covered under your private liability insurance. If you accidentally damage a wall, or drop your hairdryer into the sink and cause a crack, we will cover subsequent costs. Also, damages that you unintentionally cause to hotel rooms or holiday homes, fall under this category (Mietsachschäden) and will be covered by us. However, this doesn’t apply to glass breakage or damage to your rental residence due to wear and tear.
Unfortunately, your insurance policy doesn’t cover every annoying thing that can happen. We don’t cover glass breakage you cause to your landlord’s property, or damage relating to normal wear-and-tear like scratches or stains, or damage that arises gradually, like mold or rust. Here’s a guide to what’s covered and what’s not under your personal liability policy.
Generally, yes. We cover damage or injury caused by most pets. But we don’t cover damage caused by a dog or horse that you own, or that’s permanently in your care. You’ll have to look into pet owners liability insurance. We do make an exception for certified service dogs as well as dogs and horses that are temporarily in your care.
If your claim is approved, we’ll issue payment in euro, minus the amount of the deductible (if it applies), directly into your account.
Our goal is for the majority of claims to be paid almost instantly. However, there will be cases in which we’ll need to fully review the incident to approve the claim, and there will be liability claims that may take longer to settle.
The Lemonade Giveback is how we support amazing nonprofits who are doing good in the world.
Insurance works by pooling small amounts of money (premiums) from a large group of people to pay for the unlucky few who suffer covered losses (claims). Since it’s impossible to predict how much money will be needed to cover these losses, the amounts people are asked to pay may be higher than what’s needed some years. Often, there’s money left at the end of the year.
Whereas traditional insurance companies keep that money as profit, we don’t. Instead, after taking a flat fee upfront, we donate the leftover € to nonprofit partners chosen by the Lemonade community.
We calculate and pay the Giveback every year during the summer.
We work with a wide range of organizations that align with our mission of transparency and progressive stances. We’re always listening to customer suggestions, and reacting to urgent current events, so we’re constantly adding to our diverse list of local, national, and global nonprofits.
We assess the quality of nonprofit organizations based on their transparency to the public and their financial, fundraising, and administrative procedures. Find the full list of Giveback partners here.
Once you pick a cause, it will be set until we pay the next annual Giveback. Once the Giveback is paid, you will have an opportunity to pick a new cause.
We’ll be happy to consider your cause for our Giveback program. For more information, reach out to us at [email protected].
No. Giveback is part of our corporate policy, and our plan is to pay it every year. But sometimes, the group of Lemonade policyholders who choose the same Giveback charity will not have any money left to give back, because their claims depleted the Giveback pool. Paying claims is our top priority, and in extreme circumstances could come at the expense of Giveback.
Lemonade only pays a Giveback with respect to active policies.
